Morgado's Kindness Basketball A-Thon
This activity has an incredible impact on the physical, cognitive, social and emotional developmental aspects of my students because in one simple activity I am able to encompass numerous concepts that will lead them to get involved in a positive action in their community rather than focusing on those negatives already established. One of the objectives of the activity is to exhibit attributes of self-discipline, positive behavior and kindness toward others while understanding and applying social skills such as sportsmanship, fairness, and cooperation. This allows the students to observe, respect and learn other’s abilities while participating in an appropriate manner. At the end, my students develop the idea that participating in community activities and accepting each other’s abilities can empower them to achieve their group and individual goals.
I created and developed this event and named it Morgado's Kindness Basketball A-Thon six years ago. Working in collaboration with administrators and the counselor of the school, we establish a professional bond by sending letters to companies, requesting donations for turkeys as well as starting a canned food drive. We select the neediest and most deserving student from each classroom.
The event is always scheduled on the school day prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday. The grade levels meet at the basketball court and teachers are paired up with the student selected from their class. Each teacher has sixty seconds to make as many basketball shots as possible from five different locations on the court. The selected student helps the teacher by getting all the rebounds. The teacher-student team with the highest score will enable that student to receive a special Thanksgiving dinner. The surprise factor is that after the team with the highest score is mentioned, I announce that all the student participants will receive a dinner basket. The Morgado's Kindness Basketball-A-Thon accomplishment is very significant, not only for my students but also for the entire faculty and the community because the lesson encourage and inspire my students to condition their heart not just with exercise but by filling it up with good actions of kindness.
Teaching Suggestions/Tips:
Set up a Kindness Basketball-A-Thon committee with Special Area Teachers prior to the event.
