Name of Best Practice: Super Sport of the Week Program

Rationale/Purpose of Event: The program was designed to recognize students for their accomplishments, interests and improvements in sports during Physical Education class or extracurricular activities on their own time that promotes Health, Fitness and "Writing".

Suggested Grade Level: 6-8

Materials Needed: Nomination Boxes, nomination forms, small container of pencils for students to write nominations, certificates created by teacher or store-bought, incentive prize such as free buckets of golf balls, free bowling passes, free skating passes, personal pan pizzas, one month fitness membership passes, etc.

Super Sport of the Week Program

Each week students are encouraged by their P.E. teachers to nominate their peers for their accomplishments in sports, good displays of sportsmanship during class, or anything positive that promotes healthly lifestyles. The nominations are placed in the "Super Sport" boxes that are located in the locker rooms, the Media center and the Health room and are collected on Friday afternoons by the P.E. teachers. The teachers choose one 6th, one 7th and one 8th grade student to represent their grade as THE "Super Sport" for the coming week. The selections are based on how well-written the nomination form is and the amount of information given, which makes this a good writing tool for both boys and girls. The nomination forms are computer generated and are 1/4 size of a regular sheet of paper. After the selections are made the teachers call home over the weekend to parents to verify that accurate information was given and to obtain other sports information that we may not know about such as being a black belt or horseback riding competitor. The parent is asked to keep the award a secret from the student until Monday morning where the student finds out on our TV News that is broadcasted during homeroom where there is an annoucement that they have been selected. The Super Sport receives their award and incentive in front of their entire P.E. class and will wear our bright colored Super Sport T-shirt during their week as Super Sport. The students names are posted on a large running record board in the main office hallway that is on display all year long. In the month of February students extend this award by researching and nominating "teachers and staff members" for their accomplishments or involvement in sports as lifetime activities. They too get to wear the t-shirts, receive the incentives and certificate and get to hang a banner in their classroom for that week. This program is very popular because it gives students recognition for their nomination, for being one of 100+ super sports a year, for P.E. teachers to communicate with parents, for students to use a a writing tool and to involve the entire school in promoting fitness through sports.

Variations:

Teacher Super Sport for a certain month

Boys nominate girls, girls nominate boys

Super Sport of the Month out of the weekly Super Sports (votes)

Super Sport of the Year (votes)- Given a 3-month pass to a local

Fitness Center from community donations

Teaching Suggestions/Tips:

The program must have the enthusiasm of the P.E. Department as it is a program that needs to be promoted throughout the year. Make a big deal out of each Super Sport and give them special privileges in class during their week. For example, let them lead exercises, choose an activity, go first in line, ect. Try to make sure that winners are selected on merit and that this does not become a popularity contest.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

All students are eligible to participate and the most well-written nomination is selected which puts all students on the same playing field. Not all students who can "do everything" are always selected but sensitivity is given to all students abilities and what they have accomplished or displayed as individuals. Students with disabilities can be nominated by their adaptive/mainstream teacher for those that excel in class or in events like the Special Olympics.
